Insurance Auto Auctions’ National Car Donation Campaign a Success

Artilcle, News No Comments »

The National Kidney Foundation along with its charitable efforts in helping out people to combat kidney disease have joined hands with Insurance Auto Auctions, Inc. (IAAI), in a a new philanthropic car donation program.

Insurance Auto Auctions, Inc. (IAA) happens to be a wholly owned subsidiary of KAR Auction Services Inc. who are known for providing the advantage in salvage auto auctions with its Hybrid Auction Model combining live and live-online auctions. IAA reportedly flaunts more than 155 facilities across the United States and Canada which include outlets providing services like vehicle suppliers and buyers with powerful solutions to process and acquire total-loss, recovered-theft, fleet lease, donation and rental vehicles. The IAA Hybrid Auction Model includes among others th popular live, live-online, and proxy bidding. Let me tell you, together with their mature global buyer base and diverse inventory they are known for giving way to some of the industry's highest returns for vehicle providers. The most important fact that remains is that they have spent 28 years in the industry and they have the keys to comprehensive warehouse of salvage auction data.I think their venture is a success.

The program named as "One Car One Difference"(TM), will be launched this December, and is asking for donation of unused or unwanted vehicles to help raise much needed funds for a number of participating charities.

John Davis, CEO of the National Kidney Foundation stated,

We are pleased to partner with IAA on this exciting outreach campaign to increase awareness of the positive benefits of vehicle donations and our Kidney Cars program,Since 1983, vehicle donations have provided the National Kidney Foundation with more than $100 million to help fund patient and professional education and early detection, research and organ donation programs to help the 26 million people with kidney disease.

Tom O'Brien, chief executive officer at IAA said,

We value our long-standing relationship with the National Kidney Foundation,We are truly honored to have them as our premier benefactor charity for the One Car One Difference(TM) national car donation campaign. The organization's support further highlights the value they have known to be true for several decades -- that one car can truly make a difference for the people they serve through advocacy, education and research.

The IAA Donation Division has been providing non-profit organizations with fully devoted services in donation processing -- they are successful in their approach and are among the leaders in the industry. Last year also whole lot of organizations were benefitted from simillar donations and the monetary value was worth millions.

Jeanene O'Brien, vice president at IAA told,

The National Kidney Foundation has a rich history in vehicle donation, and has experienced firsthand how gratifying it is to see so many people donate their cars to make a difference, Vehicle donation not only benefits charities, it plays a crucial role in our efforts to be responsible stewards of our environment. IAA's business model depends on recycling and reusing, which results in quantifiable energy savings and eliminates the need to manufacture more metal while also helping to keep it out of landfills each year.

Five Justifications to the Fact that Electric Cars Might Just Fail

Artilcle, Electric Cars, Gas Savers No Comments »

Eying towards a greener globe the Chevy Volt and the Nissan Leaf is all set to hit the streets real soon in the coming days, and what's more the Ford Focus Electric is scheduled to appear late next year. Well, the question that's storming minds is whether Americans are ready to embrace electric cars. As a matter of fact GE already has made declarations on its intention to grab 25,000 EVs (including 12,000 Volts). But, as far as the mass mentality is counted there are whole lot of underlying facts that might just delay the popularity of this new breed.

1. Money

To a middle-class person money is the main point of concern when he goes to market while the Leaf costs around $32,780, and the Volt gets it to up another level, at $41,000. The fact that adds to complex is that gas prices are relatively stable at the moment with little chances of rising.

2. Time

The next concern that comes in is about the time now, come on if you can not get the car charged within time, its of no good use to you but achieving a full charge with standard 120-volt sockets found in most homes is supposed to take 20 hours. So, you need to go for an upgrade to a 240-volt charger which promises cut down the time to roughly 8 hours but at the cost of another two grand.

3. Range Anxiety

Now with electric cars one of the major concerns happens to be the fear of running out of power far from home. As it is public charging stations are few and far apart at this moment. To add to this the fact remains that most people commute less than 40 miles to work on average. So, if this be the scenario then people will obviously step back from getting these vehicles. Well, according to a test, 33 miles is what comes out of the charge and then you are all free to move on with the auxiliary gas engine.

4. Misinformation

Well, apart from the three leading reasons there are a lot of misconceptions rooted in people's mind such as 38 percent of people believe the maximum range of battery electrics to be 50 miles, when in fact it’s often double. Another 35 percent of people consider electrics “less reliable” and 20 percent people consider that they are less safe than gasoline cars.

5. Man’s Inexorable Refusal to Change

The unavoidable fact remains as people are always afraid of changes. It's a basic instinct that things might just not work right, or there are to some extent feelings such as things are better the way the are, there are thought like, now what, everything seems to be under control, why should we go for a change all of a sudden. They say necessity is the mother of invention, and its true that the day mineral fuel dies out of the earth we will be bound to shift to these electric vehicles, so why not now? So, what do you think are you ready, to face the change, why not give it a try would be my take.

Lexus CT200h Review

Artilcle, Reviews No Comments »

Looking at the downgrading sales of its Lexus range Toyota invited TTAC to a press launch event signifying the launch of the CT200h hatchback hybrid.

Taking a closer look will specify that on the surface the CT200h looks like it could be the long-lost hatchback cousin of the IS250 or the IS350, but unlike the assumption that most are making out what reality speaks is that it is based on the Lexus HS250h which is itself has the underlying traits of the European Toyota Avensis. Now, despite sharing a few parts with the Toyota Prius, there are many who have slammed the HS250 for simply being a “Lexus Prius.” Nothing can be done about that. The CT200h may well be the hatchback HS250h in quite a number of ways, but let me tell you what actually makes up the car is the same 1.8L Atkinson cycle engine and Hybrid Synergy Drive system that comprises current generation Prius.

Well, to speak up the truth, one of the many complaints about the HS250h has been its lackluster fuel economy as well as its weak performance. Though, the HS250h could have been forgiven if Ford hadn’t released the Lincoln MKZ hybrid which happens to be larger, matches the HS250h for 0-60 acceleration bests the HS250 by a full 6MPG. Infact in an attempt to rectify the problem, Lexus put the HS/CT shared platform on a diet and what actually resulted is that the CT200h tips the scales at 3,130lbs a 550lb weight reduction over the HS. Now, thats good isn't it? Let me brief you, the specified weight loss sure makes the CT200h feel more nimble and undoubtedly contributes to the much higher EPA numbers of 42/41/42 (highway/city/combined), but instead of keeping the 187HP Camry Hybrid sourced power plant to make the CT a sporty hybrid, Lexus has opted to transplant the relatively anemic 134HP engine from the Prius essentially which is unchanged under the hood of the CT.

As a matter of fact it is obvious to any and everyone who has spent time in Lexus’ other models, CT200 is hopefully the cheapest Lexus available and starts around at $30,000. Now, there has been a trade-off here with quality, although It isn't such that the materials are cheap, but then, they are less than I would expect from Lexus. To be precise, the dashboard and rear door trim plastics particularly disappoint the consumers and quite surprisingly the memory seat controls look like an aftermarket addition. It is really fortunate that the steering wheel really shines, as a matter of fact it is well weighted, perfectly shaped and materials quality is exceptional. Also what needs t be mentioned is that after an 110 mile test drive it is a real easy job to get acquainted with the interior and the only quibble spotted can be notified as the Lexus Navigation system. Well the other worth mentionable facts are that the system utilizes the same old mouse/joystick look-a-like controls that have been spreading all across the Lexus lineup, but what itches things up is the picture quality which happens to be less than inspiring and I don’t find the controller much comfortable as far as usability is concerned.

Belvidere’s Contaminated Salvage Yard Secured By EPA

Artilcle, News, Salvage Cars No Comments »

As the news follows, officials from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are in for the removal of more than 250 containers of flammable liquids and very dangerous, poisonous gases from a residual defunct auto salvage yard located on McKinley Avenue.

Well what the officials have to say about this event is that removal of unsafe chemicals and cleanup of soil contamination taking place at the former Cadie Auto Salvage, addressed 1451 McKinley Ave., may tend to shed off at least $250,000. As it is the federal government is kinda footing the bill and hopes to seek the so-called reimbursement from responsible parties.

What the EPA officials believe is that the pollution is still contained within the site. To confirm of the fact a test was conducted on two of the nearby water wells, and guess what no trace of contamination has been found.

Now, to start it off from where it actually began, Cadie Auto Salvage, which is also popular by the name Cadie Car Hauling, was apparently founded and operated by Larry Cadie of Belvidere until his death in 2008. As reported, post his death the family members attempted to clean up the property this year and notified the Illinois EPA after they got hold of potentially hazardous materials.

Steve Faryan, EPA’s on-scene coordinator stated,

The U.S. EPA went on for inspection of the site in August and since then has been overseeing the cleanup,

Allegedly, gas cylinders of varying size were found outside a pole barn on the property and quite a number of them were labeled “chlorine” and “poisonous gas”. In addition to those there were 60 to 70 cylinders packed in wood crates spotted on the back of a truck, labeled as bearing combustible chemicals, which include triethyl borane, silane and chlorine. Also there was a 2,000-gallon tank of waste oil and several other drums of varying sizes which contained gasoline and waste oil.

Faryan commented,

It’s important to clear these off-site quickly, We did find some oils, greases and gasoline on the surface and below the surface — there is contamination. There’s going to have to be continued investigation of that.

The agency has sent letters to the Cadie family and Environmental Technical Services Corp., who Faryan said are responsible for the hazardous waste on-site. The agency could seek cleanup costs from both parties, he said.

He also added,

It doesn’t have to be done immediately, but it has to be as soon as possible — we don’t want this sitting so close to a neighborhood or a school, We’ll keep going through the winter until it’s all out of here.

Michael Houselog, who happens to be Belvidere Superintendent, stated that the district has been assured by the EPA that

“we have nothing to be concerned about at this time, probably forever, because of the way it’s being handled. We’ll be in touch with the EPA and follow their guidance in reaching out to our parents.”

Isabel Fierro who lives close enough told that her husband and all three daughters feel safe,

“It doesn’t preoccupy me, They’re working on cleaning the dirt. They came and told us.”

The EPA hopes to have the situation handled by Jan 1 with all the harmful chemicals removed and cleanup work complete.

The Trails of Combustion

Artilcle No Comments »

Interestingly, though there are a lot of environmentally conscious people enthusing about the potential of electric cars, the experts from the industry depict that the death of the traditional internal combustion engine is still a long way away.

Electric cars are coming in bulks and is going to flood the roads expectedly in early 2011, but it will take decades before they displace more than a single-digit percentage of our current automotive fleet.

Now that's exactly the very consensus of a cross-section of Australian experts who come at the issue from a variety of perspectives, which includes carmakers and entrepreneurs working in the trenches with electric vehicles (EVs). This community weighs the excitement of the coming clean technology against a host of external factors, which can be the ones like the pace of consumer acceptance, national regulation, climate change imperatives, the price of petrol and the possibility of running out of available oil (known as 'peak oil').

Evan Thornley happens to be the chief executive of Better Place Australia. They are the advocates for setting up a network of stations that can swap battery packs in less than 60 seconds because recharging times can be lengthy.

Mr. Thornley is an EV enthusiast, but he's thoughts regarding the transition to them is reserved. According to him, by approximately 2015, battery cars will have "gathered real pace," and if things fall into right track by 2025 "they will begin to dominate. And finally, the game will be over for internal combustion" in and around 2030.

What actually points as the key issues for Thornley are the public charging infrastructure and battery financing. He adds that, "If I didn't think both things would actually happen, then I'd be more pessimistic".

Lets look at the various predictions with caveats.

What most of the experts offer is their opinions with asterisks and caveats, because many factors will influence the end of our more than 100-year dependence on internal combustion. Interestingly, Dr Phillip Paevere, the principal research scientist at CSIRO Ecosystem Sciences in Victoria, and is involved in a host of projects that include the "Electric Driveway," which aims at integrating battery cars with household energy management. What his argument happens to be is that the limits of internal-combustion efficiency will be reached soon. Let me tell you, an efficient internal combustion engine typically converts 25 to 30 per cent of the energy contained in the fuel into motion. Well, an electric vehicle can efficiently convert up to 80 per cent of the input energy.

Dr Paevere adds that,

Never in the history of motoring have so many unsubstantiated claims been made and blindly accepted as facts than with electric cars, My prediction is that this high number of expensive and inefficient electric cars going into production without a proven customer base will quickly lead to oversupply, causing a slump in prices and the widespread abandonment of many electric car development projects on economic grounds.

So, i guess time will now decide the winner among the two. All that we can do is wait and watch.

Auto Salvage Yard Contest Worth $5,000

Artilcle, Junk Cars, Salvage Cars, Used Cars, Used Parts No Comments »

Well, the salvage car biz is pretty interesting and over the past few years it has been a budding market with lots of rising prospects. But this is something which is gonna inspire awe in your heart and at the same time storm your mind. Yes, here's a Salvage Car biz owner with a contest worth none less than 5000 USD. Now, can you just think of that? No? Well, give it a second thought cause it's real and its happening.

Rusty is the owner we have been talking of. He owns an Auto Salvage owing to the site www.rustysautosalvage.com, it happens to be a nationwide auto salvage business for Rusty, which is headquartered in New York. The company has announced a mouth-watering new promotion for the month of November 2010 that is sure to salivate you. Its kinda simple also, all you got to do is sell Rusty’s a junk, used, high-mileage, damaged, wrecked, or worn-out old car, truck, RV, or van during the month of November and guess what, you will automatically be included as a part of it all, you will be a contestant to win $5,000 cash at a drawing to be held on December 13th and who can tell you might be really lucky.

Joseph Baumann, Rusty’s Chief Marketing Officer has unveiled that,

Each year over 10 million vehicles reach the end of their useful lives. Improper disposal releases mercury, plastics, oil, grease, anti-freeze, heavy metals, fluorocarbons, and fuels into the air, soil, and groundwater. Incentivizing the public is key to getting these vehicles off the streets and lawns of local communities and into environmentally sound automobile salvage facilities, With this promotion we hope to raise the public’s awareness of the harm these vehicles cause to local environments and alert them to the fact that, because of scrap values, not only is vehicle removal free of charge; in most cases, owners will receive a generous purchase price. The entire process takes minutes and is easily arranged by phone, or by submitting an online form .

Rusty's Auto Salvage is known to make the payments for junk cars, high-mileage cars, damaged, wrecked, or just plain worn-out old cars as well as junk vans, trucks, and RVs and all in cash. Well, the vehicles do not even have to be in running condition. Their business model is somewhat like this, one of the nationwide network of towing services will come to the vehicle's location, they will pay the owner in cash right there, and then finally tow the vehicle totally free of charge to a local facility for safe auto recycling.

What's more this junk car removal service benefits the local economy as much as the local environment, by turning what was once an eyesore into an asset, all credits to Rusty for establishing such a noble business. Infact, the customers aren't the only ones paid cash on the spot for junk vehicles, in list are the local towing companies and salvage yards who partner with Rusty, they also enjoy the same facilities. Let me tell you the real benefit is by processing the vehicle into spare parts, cores, and valuable scrap metals which they can very easily convert into revenue.

Nissan To Make Three More Electric Vehicles For The U.S.

Artilcle, Electric Cars, News No Comments »

Just as electric cars are beginning to roll out of the factories, each and every car company is taking a different stance on it. There are some who are sitting on the sidelines, watching what will happen while the others can be spotted placing safe bets with hybrid cars. Nissan, who happens to be a respectable car manufacturer however, seems all set to charge full-speed ahead with electric vehicles, although the fact remains that the only people to drive the Leaf so far are but a handful of journalists.

What Nissan has in mind is to build three more electric cars for the U.S. in addition to the Leaf. Any guesses what they are after?

Nissan has long been in the car biz and can be viewed as an understated car maker. People who have owned a Nissan, will agree to them being great as a car. Well, everybody who has owned a Nissan still owns it i guess, cause there is no issue with its performance so, no probability of giving a second thought to it. That allows one to freely dig longevity on any vehicle, though in terms of excitement they haven’t really been known to set the world on fire, at least not until they announced the Leaf. Let me tell you, 90% of Leaf costumers happen to be new to the Nissan brand, so you can always hope for that longevity to carry forward into their electric vehicles as well.

If I am asked then I would comment that the electric cars still are a risky business proposition at this point of time, as one or two summers of low gas-prices could be enough to convince a lot people that we really don’t need electric cars quite yet. As a matter of fact they also carry a price premium, and to add to it if today’s elections go a certain way, all of the tax incentives for electric vehicles might not be long for this world. Though the initial response has been altogether great, but what really counts is the sustained interest that will really pave the way for electric cars.

So this is what, Nissan has to say. Right after the Leaf hits the streets, Nissan has an electric Infiniti, a small electric van, and also in line is an electrified urban car ready to roll out in the next four years. Their belief is that there will be a market for a wide variety of electric vehicles, and that also real soon. I may be kinda down with a luxury Leaf and an electric van, but to be truthful I am not at all sure about an urban electric car. Another thing to consider is that the city folk tend to do less driving anyway, and the underlying fact remains that unless they can price such a car to be competitive with cheap runabouts like the Ford Fiesta or Toyota Yaris, that might very well be a car they have a tough time selling.

How To Buy A Car Online Safely – Tips

Artilcle, Salvage Cars No Comments »

Online vehicle purchases have grown in popularity with a high number of private sellers and dealers posting near new vehicles for sale at attractive price points.  With eBay motors becoming a premier source to purchase vehicles online, many are warming up to the idea of investing a motor vehicle sight unseen.  If you have found one, or several vehicles that strike your fancy posted on the world wide web, it is important to know how to buy a car online safely.  By following these tips you can purchase a vehicle at a fraction of the price without having to haggle with high pressure salesmen.

Trusting an eBay seller is perhaps the biggest issue when purchasing a car online.  The key to trusting a dealer or individual on eBay is reviewing customer feedback and satisfaction ratings.  If you notice a seller is new or has never sold a vehicle or high valued item online, you may want to avoid this seller.  Look for premier sellers or those who have 100 percent feedback.  It takes time to build a buyers trust, most people are not willing to mess up their rankings for a profit when it can damage them in the future.

Aside from researching the seller, buyers should also research the vehicle they are purchasing.  If the vehicle is located out of state, chances are you will be purchasing it without ever seeing it in person.  Pictures will give you an idea of the aesthetics but not the mechanics.  Request the VIN from the seller and run consumer reports on the vehicle.  Also contact the DMV to determine if the vehicle is salvaged or has back fees.  All of these issues are important.

As with anything you are buying on eBay, you must go with your gut.  If a deal is too good to be true, it more than likely is.  Do the proper research and be wise when you are educating yourself on how to buy a car online safely.

The Dawn of Electric Cars in Michigan

Artilcle, Electric Cars No Comments »

Reportedly, after a couple of years electric plug-in cars are going to be manufactured and made mainstream. Already, this year round, showrooms are expected to boast these cars on display. Well the sudden rise in production comes the debate over how to charge the vehicles. In fact many areas already are pushing for electric car infrastructures in homes, while others argue that electric cars are not the future. To speak the truth, countless incentives are now being offered to consumers who wish to install charging stations within their homes.

If electric car infrastructures in homes are counted upon, consumers will be given three options to choose from. Of the three, the first allows customers to plug their vehicle into a standard 110-volt circuit and pay rates dependent on the time of use and season. The second get through facilitates a charging station with higher voltage and faster charging time and would allow the user to pay time-of-use rates. The final gate way is offered to a limit of 250 customers and would set a monthly fixed rate of $35 for the first 300 kilowatt hours of electricity used by the consumer. To add to all this, customers are able to use public charging stations. As early as in September Detroit's NextEnergy unveiled the first recharging station in Michigan by California-based Coulomb Technologies.

Speaking of fund, the U.S. Department of Energy recently granted $5 million each to DTE and GM in an effort to use them as a source of educating and gaining the support of the public on the benefits of infrastructure. Well, as a matter of fact Southeast Michigan happens to be just one of nine regions---Washington D.C., Seattle, and Los Angeles, to name a few --- that have been granted federal money to create charging stations. What's more, Governor Granholm and President Obama awarded billions in taxpayer dollars to battery companies and electric infrastructure. Award of a Livonia battery plant $238 million in tax subsidies has been received by the state of Michigan itself also.

Having the support of states, their people, and the overall country, this new wave of transportation and all of the elements corresponding with it is bound to take off, or is it? Interestingly,  the co-founder of Tesla, an electric car company, says that electric cars with never be more than a niche market. Also, quite a number of people confidently support this view. Ian Wright, the famed electric guru, puts his faith on the fact that "Gas prices will have to soar above $10 per gallon to make consumer EVs economical even at the lower battery costs". Not only this, Ian even argues that electric vehicles will cost up to twice as much as gas vehicles.

Things get kinda messed up when those who are on his side of the fence find themselves wondering if it is worth the trillions of dollars to support the cause, especially if this trend happens to not take off. To get on with it, the end will see the people deciding what actually happens. Now, the situation is such that, if they support the initial extra costs of being green and earth friendly, electric cars and charging stations are sure to become mainstream. On the contrary, if the support of this new technology is not felt, electric cars may never make more than a small scratch in the fight for conservation.

Check Your Car’s Ticket Getting Affinity Today

Artilcle, Used Cars No Comments »

It may get real hard to believe the concept of "you are what you drive," but the police who hand out traffic tickets apparently do. But then, a study released this month found that certain makes and models of cars were ticketed more than others and some of the findings just might surprise you.

Well, as the proceedings are presently, it's no longer a shock that the survey found that younger drivers in flashy sport utility vehicles (SUVs) or sports cars attracted their share of tickets. Still the question arises, would you be astonished to learn the car that attracted the most tickets was a $100,000 Mercedes SL convertible?

As a matter of fact, what the survey by Quality Planning, a unit of Verisk Analytics, a research firm serving the insurance industry, found was that expensive, high-performance luxury cars received more traffic violations than any other group. Well, what should be taken into count is that an analysis of the data, according to the Wall Street Journal, showed that these cars are usually driven by middle aged men who want to get what they paid for -- or at least can't resist the temptation to test their car's capabilities when they get on an open road.

The probable way to hedge your bets against getting a ticket, according to the study, is to buy a sensible American car. Interestingly, the list of most ticketed vehicles includes just two American made cars and both have been discontinued, the Hummer and the Pontiac Grand Prix.

Let me tell you, Bob U'Ren, a Quality Planning senior vice president, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, said his company studied data on about two million cars to see which models racked up the most moving violations. Well, that's exactly how they came up with the winner, the Mercedes SL, whose owners collect four times as many tickets as the average driver.

Also, two other high-powered Mercedes also made the top 10. They happen to be the 507-horsepower CLS 63 AMG sedan and the CLK 63 AMG coupe. There are others who had above average ticket rates, those were four small cars, the Scion tC and xB, the Acura Integra and the Volkswagen GTI. Another astonishing thing would be, the number two on the list of most ticketed cars was the Toyota Camry Solara convertible -- a car favored by middle-aged women, according to the data. To round of the whole thing, the most ticketed group are the Hummers, both the H3 and the H2 -- and the Pontiac Grand Prix.

Now, for those of you who may want to drive the kind of vehicle police seem to ignore, the survey found less ticketed models are SUVs, minivans and sedans, with the least ticketed vehicle being the now discontinued Buick Rainier SUV. Now that's because the average driver of the Rainier is 61 years old.

When questioned on the fact as to why certain combinations of drivers and cars seemed to attract the attention of police officers, Mr. U'Ren said the data suggests that high-performance cars or vehicles that cultivate a brash image attract drivers who enjoy driving fast.

Altough there are controversies but, the survey did uncover one car that doesn't quite fit that profile. It's the Scion xB -- a boxy urban mini-wagon with a 158 horsepower, four-cylinder engine. Though, the average age of a Scion xB driver is 37 years old, the vehicle has recieved  a record number of tickets at about 2.7 times the average.
