Auto Propane Conversion Kits - How Many Types Are There?

The auto propane conversion kits are an excellent idea that will save you a lot of money in maintenance, fuel, and more. Your engine will last longer and cleaner. In addition, you will notice your vehicle now has more power than it ever did before when you decide on running a conversion kit through your car. Getting rid of the nasty gasoline and running clean propane is also a good thing for the environment.

The first type of auto propane conversion kits you can choose from is the open-loop system. This system is very basic because it doesn’t control any electronics in the vehicle. Because it doesn’t have these controls you will not be able to gauge how well the vehicle is performing. This is the only downside if you want to be able to monitor the performance of your off-roading vehicle.

The second type of auto propane conversion kit you can install in your vehicle is the closed-loop system. This system has a sensor in it that will provide data continuously. This way you are able to monitor the performance of your car and if it needs certain adjustments with the fuel or the air you can make them. The closed-loop system for a propane conversion is much more expensive than the open-loop system because of the monitoring features.

The auto propane conversion kits are ideal for a vehicle that is used for off-roading purposes. This doesn’t have to be the case though because you can convert your car from gasoline and save a ton of money too. There are two primary types of conversion systems you can install in your vehicle. These two types depend on if you want to be able to monitor the performance of your vehicle or not.

Replacement Auto Parts Where to Find Them

Salvage Cars No Comments »

When needing a replacement part for you car, where do you shop? Like many motorists you may head down to the big box retailer for all of your needs. A good choice both for value and for selection. Still, mostly any retailer is limited as to what they can stock. This especially holds true if you drive a rare or uncommon vehicle. Try finding a window regulator for your ’69 Torino at the parts store; they’ll get it for you but it will have to be back ordered. So, where should you shop? That’s up to you, but let’s goes over the options that you have.

The Salvage Yard. Let’s admit it: there isn’t anything wrong with going to the junkyard to find the part you need. My ’78 VW Rabbit’s window handle broke and I snagged one off of a junker for just a few bucks. Still, if you are looking for a radiator, engine, exhaust stuff, or anything else that actually runs, you risk that the part will fail soon after you place it in your car. Naturally, the price you pay through the junkyard should be the lowest price going.

Your Dealer. On the other side of the spectrum is your car dealer. If they don’t have it in stock, they can get if for you. Service with a smile and a price that will make you frown! Yes, you will pay dearly for some parts, as middleman mark ups kick in.

Your Retail Store. Retail auto supply chains typically have the broadest selection and the lowest prices of any of the brick and mortar retailers. Your best option for a good buy is when something is on sale; stock items will cost you the prevailing retail rate, but that is the price you pay for convenience. Overhead [buildings, labor] is high even with most national retailers.

Shop Online. Wholesale providers of automobile replacement parts and accessories are springing up all over the internet. Some stores are good, some are not. What to look for: available customer service agents; a toll free number where you can call someone to talk with directly; a store that never closes and has a secured payment site; and clearly understood shipment, payment, and return policies. Generally, an online retailer should be a great option as low overhead and purchasing directly from the manufacturer is what sets these wholesalers apart from the rest. Still, do your homework and make sure that the site is what it says it is.

One special warning: the growth of the counterfeit parts industry is causing fits for retailers and consumers. If you suspect that you have purchased a bogus part, return it to the retailer for a full return. One more good reason to learn what a company’s return policy is before you do business with them.

In all, shopping for parts is easier today, thanks to the internet. From the ease of your computer you can compare prices, service, shipping options, warranties, and more. The consumer is the winner and retailers are keeping prices low in order to bring in additional business.

Drag Racing Car - Is It For You

Salvage Cars No Comments »

Do you find yourself on Friday evenings in stead of going out watching drag racing videos. Do you turn around and watch drag racing meets on Saturday and on Sunday go to the local drag racing track to see the latest competitors. Then maybe drag racing is in your blood and now is your time to act on this impulse.

Lorne Walters, a true drag racing enthusiast, and a drag car racer worked on his 1984 drag car for over two years before getting a chance to race it professionally. The result was one of the fastest cars on the strip. He competed against cars that had higher rated horsepower than his 1984 drag racing street car that he picked up for next-to-nothing. He made this happen by collecting inexpensive, used parts for over a year, until he finally bolted it all together and cranked the ignition.

Since then, he has put a couple of seasons of driving and fine-tuning under his belt. He explained that it is not major changes that produce big leaps in performance but many little changes over time that makes the difference between winning and losing a race.

Little changes like removing the muffler increased his engine’s horsepower. Making the car lighter by removing over three hundred pounds of non-essentials. Reducing the load on the engine by removing the belt-driven fan and replacing it with a battery-powered fan. Changing from street tires to tires that get sticky when you lay rubber and heat them up increased his car’s traction. All of these changes increased his car’s speed.

When you’re counting your racing time in tenths of a second, every little change brings you closer to winning. Does this kind of work get you excited?

One of Lorne’s motto’s to live by is, “You can’t learn it if you don’t do it.” If you want to become a better and more successful Drag Race driver, you can’t just read about it or watch it, you must do it! The more you do it, and apply what you learn from the experience, the better you become.

But before you go all out, you need to get some experience. Before Lorne ever thought of driving his own car he joined a pit crew for a stock car driver, which allowed him to network with other enthusiasts and also get into the thick of it. Once he got bitten by the race car fever, getting behind the wheel became a driving obsession.

Consistency is also one of the major keys to winning. In Drag Racing, it isn’t always the fastest car that wins, but more important the one who stays consistent in doing the little things right. Good race timing scores must be repeated often. It’s like gaining a motor relex in your body. The more you do the same thing over and over again the easier it become to accomplish it over and over again.

Lorne also learned quickly that when you’re on the strip, ready to go, you don’t hang around waiting to be “told” to go. Waiting for the tree of lights to reach green-for-go cost him 1.2 seconds. Which meant that his competitor, who exploded his engine’s horsepower into forward motion just prior to green, left the gate just as the tree hit green and was way out ahead of him. There is always a lag time before the car will actually burst forward.

When Lorne started out with his own car, tagging along with a successful racer who knew the circuit and all the ropes placed him car lengths beyond his competition. He also gained much of his knowledge by asking lots of questions, searching the Internet for free information, and by hands-on experience.

Drag Racing is no longer a hobby to Lorne, it’s a passion – a passion that pushes him from race to race throughout the season.

Maybe this could be your passion, and like Lorne, you may get some or even your entire car sponsored by local businesses.

Not sure if you would like it? Some drivers are allowed to take passengers during certain parts of the day. Why not get to know one and go for a trial spin?

Antique Harley Motorcycle Parts

Salvage Cars No Comments »

If you are interested in antique Harley motorcycle parts then you may want to buy Harley Davidson parts listing books. The first parts listing book for this motorcycle brand covers parts that were used in Harleys between 1909 and 1932. This manual will include parts for side car models, twin models and single models of Harleys produced during this time period. The second volume in this parts listing series covers Harley Davidson models that were produced between 1930 and 1949.

Antique Harley motorcycle decals and stickers are another item that you may want to add to your shopping list. These parts are very inexpensive and they are still relatively easy to find. Online auction sites are great places to find vintage Harley decals, as are Harley trade shows and flea markets.

If you are interested in really unique antique Harley Motorcycle parts then you may want to look for one of a kind products. One item that can liven up your Harley collection is a Harley Davidson police siren. Most of the sirens that you can find on the secondary market still work, and those that don’t work can usually be repaired.

Shopping for antique Harley motorcycle parts is not difficult to do. Harleys have been a part of motorcycle culture since the beginning. You can find Harley parts in almost every part of the world. If you can’t find the parts that you need locally then you may want to try online auctions, online salvage parts dealers, Harley message boards and the Harley Davidson company web site.

Getting Parts For A Motorcycle

Salvage Cars No Comments »

Tune-ups don’t require ignition coil replacements. Sometimes you need to replace the spark plug caps on the ends of the wires, though. The resistance value should be around 5K ohms. Honda Tune up kits generally has plugs, points and condensers in them, as a set. The number of miles you have on the bike engine and the overall care it has had makes a lot of difference in what you will need and what may keep going for you, for a while.

The tools that came in your kit, if complete, could barely get you by on repairs/tune-ups. If you own a bike, you need to know about how to repair it and have the tools to do the job. You can go to Wal-Mart, Costco and elsewhere and get giant tool packages for $100 or less that will get you going pretty well. An Impact Driver with a selection of bits and a good hammer will be a good investment! Steel screws, resting in aluminum threads for such a long time will setup corrosion in the threads that can spell trouble in some cases.

The cables are now 33 years old…. probably time for a change! If your bike is a 1973 CB350G, then it has a front disk brake that has its own maintenance issues. Same with the CB350F. The “regular” CB350 twins had cable operated drum brakes.

You can get a lot of stuff on EBay, as far as tune-up parts go. You need to identify the exact model, of course, before you move forward, plus a good tune-up guide and/or shop manual will be useful. I have a PDF version of a minor tune-up guide that is a reprint from a Cycle Guide magazine special booklet, but it only covers CB350 Twins. The principles of engine tuning are all the same, but the details between 2 and 4 cylinder bikes are somewhat different in layout of components.

If you used stabil or some kind of gasoline stabilizer for the winter, the carbs should be okay. I would certainly drain them and refill the tank with fresh gasoline. Yamaha makes a carb cleaner that you mix with gasoline and then funnel down the carb fuel line to clean out the parts in the float bowl while it is together. Depends on what kind of condition the parts are in, though. Honda carbs have numerous O-rings inside that need replacing after 33 years!

What you could do, and it may require some modification on your part, is to find a hard bag mount set for your bike and then go to a motorcycle salvage yard and see what they have that you may like. You would likely have to repaint them, but that requires a wind-free place to work and a bit of light sanding and paint and a few hours.

Alternatively, if you know how to work with fiberglass, you could build the bags you want yourself, but this is a long-term project that will eat up a lot of your spare time to do it quickly. You can also look on a few of the catalogue sites. In addition to that, try some of the e-groups for Kawasaki and Vulcan’s. There are a lot of specialized e-groups out there for specific makes and models of bikes. Look there, as there may be someone who is getting rid of a set that will work on your bike. It will certainly be less expensive than new.

Honda pretty much washes their hands of responsibility of supplying parts after about 10 years after end of production. They have made thousands of different models and dozens of variations of many of those, so the parts inventory and production considerations are staggering in any case.

Honda does have a vintage parts division, apparently in Japan who will make small quantities of some items that they still have tooling for, like exhaust systems for some of the fours. CB750 primarily. CMS in Holland is tied to them, to a certain extent and almost had them remake the missing #2 pipe for the 350Fs but the cost got too high.

Companies like apex cycle, retrobikes and a few others are having Asian companies remake some items. You won’t be seeing any new crankshafts or engine cases coming from Honda or anyone else. Tooling and production of this stuff is way too expensive nowadays.
I have a source in Australia who makes new Dream and CB77 mufflers from stainless steel.

It is a small company and he’s willing to do the tooling in-house just to produce the parts, but he’s getting near retiring and that source will dry up one day. A company in NZ made some beautiful new CB77 mufflers a few years back, but the supply is now gone, I believe and they don’t seem interested in doing another run again.

If there is sufficient demand, someone usually steps up and takes a shot at having parts made, but there are so many parts in a bike and so many models, that it is impossible to expect that the supply line for 40+ year old motorcycles is going to continue indefinitely. Brit bikes and scooters remained relatively unchanged for many years, so making parts for those is less of a stretch, than doing Honda camshafts for 250-305s… there were three versions of splines on just those parts.

Getting Car Insurance for Your Salvage Car

Salvage Cars No Comments »

Getting car insurance for any vehicle is necessary and is a way of life if planning to drive a car on U.S. roads. But does insuring a once salvage vehicle affect car insurance. The answer plan and simple is if you are planning to get car insurance for a salvage car then yes, your insurance will be affected.

It is necessary when looking at purchasing car insurance to disclose every known fact about a vehicle. This includes if the car being insured was a salvage car. That being said you will have to jump through some hoops after disclosing this information to an insurance agent. Most insurance agencies after finding out this information will require a letter from a mechanic attesting to the road worthiness of the vehicle, pictures of the previous damage, pictures of how the damage was repaired, and the vehicle with salvage title. After this information is presented expect that you will receive a higher premium quote than a regular vehicle. But after getting the insurance go about getting the salvage title removed and getting a regular title for your vehicle. This can be done by having the vehicle inspected by your local state inspection station. Once your vehicle has passed the inspection, take your inspection paperwork to your local DMV and prove that the vehicle is not a salvage vehicle any more. Once proved the DMV will re-issue a free and clear title that will be clear of the salvage title. Present this new title to the insurance agency to try to get a rate decrease.

Car insurance agencies are in the business of making money, not losing it to vehicles that were devalued in major accidents. Let’s say for example that a salvage car gets into another major accident and how would the insurance company know what was previous damage and what is new. So, in these cases the insurance companies may refuse to honor a insurance contract if they suspect that the insurance holder has not told them that the salvage vehicle was in a previous accident.

Tips For Buying A Used Car

Salvage Cars No Comments »

Buying a used car can be a rather affordable solution to buying a brand new car. Used cars, even at only one model year old, can be 20-30% cheaper than buying the same car brand new. Used car shoppers can find easy deals with the high number of cars being leased. These cars are usually in very good condition and have a low number of miles on them. Used cars also have lower insurance rates and buying a used car means you can afford a car that has more luxury/performance than you might usually be able to afford.

The reasons that many people think they should avoid used cars have actually changed. Used cars are generally move reliable these days than they have been in the past and the history of accidents cars have been involved in can easily be traced by the VIN number. Most car makers are now selling cars that include factory warranties. One of the best things you can do on any used car is to get a history of the accidents a car has been involved in by using the VIN number to run a Carfax report that will tell you the history of the car.

Also, if you are dealing with a third party it might be a wise idea to take the vehicle to an independent mechanic for an inspection. That way you can know what is truly the condition on the car. Dealerships will not let you do this, for the reason that they have checked the car themselves. When buying a car via classified ads or eBay call the phone number and say you are interested in the car. You will know instantly whether you are dealing with a private seller or a trader pretending to be a private seller. Always examine the speedometer and odometer area. Look for scratches, chips or other damage that would indicate that the odometer has been tampered with. It is getting harder to do these days, but it is still possible to turn back the car’s odometer.

If you see the price on a car is $5,999, try showing up to the dealer’s lot with $500-$1000 less and see if they take it. If the dealer really wants to push this car off the lot, which most do, they will accept your offer and you will walk away with a great price on your new car. You should also run a report on your car with Experian, yes, and the credit report people. They also keep detailed records of cars and also get a copy of your title. It will show you the mileage, if the odometer says otherwise, then someone possibly tampered with it. Always use due diligence when buying a used car, no matter if from private citizen or a car dealership, always suspect something is suspicious. That way, you can keep yourself safe when buying a used car and have a good car to drive for many years to come.

The Advantages Of Buying Used Auto Parts

Salvage Cars No Comments »

If you own a vehicle, inevitably at some point you are going to have to purchase auto parts for your car. When the time comes for you to have to purchase these parts, you should consider buying used auto parts to repair your car.

There are many different advantages of buying used auto parts. There are also a great many places for you to purchase these parts from. The main benefit of purchasing used auto parts is the price. This is the number one reason why many people choose to buy used parts rather than pay expensive prices for new parts. Generally, you can find used auto parts for a fraction of the price of a new part, sometimes saving as much as fifty percent from what you would normally pay.

The place you choose to purchase your used auto parts from can be a determining factor of how much you will pay. Junk yards and auto salvage yards often sell used auto parts from damaged vehicles that have been brought to them. Even though the vehicle is damaged, many of the parts of the car still function perfectly well, but since they are used the yard will sell them for a drastically discounted price. If you choose to purchase some of these used auto parts from a yard that requires you to take the part off the car yourself, you can save even more money.

However, you don’t have to go to a junk yard to find used auto parts at a great price. Many auto part stores also sell used parts that have been re manufactured, meaning the parts have been repaired or re-tooled to their original condition. These parts are still technically used, but are in like new condition. They are slightly more expensive than a junk yard part may be, however they will still cost less than a brand new part. Additionally, many of these re manufactured parts will also include a limited warranty, which is a definite advantage when you must replace a part on your vehicle.

Another key advantage to purchasing used auto parts is that it is an excellent way to help the environment. When you purchase used parts, either from a salvage yard or re manufactured from an auto parts house, you help keep materials out of landfills. While much of the vehicle can be compacted or even recycled to reduce the amount of material that is put in landfills, many individual auto parts still find their way into various trash dumps. When you purchase used parts, you help reduce the amount of these materials that are thrown away.

Purchasing used auto parts also helps reduce the need to have more new parts manufactured. This of course helps save materials that would be used to make the parts, as well as reduce the amount of fuel such as electricity that is also needed to manufacture new parts. Many times if you purchase a remanufactured part from an auto parts house, you also have the ability to take the damaged part from your car in and not only receive a discount on the part you are buying from a core charge, but also help keep a new part from having to be manufactured since they can now re manufacture your used part.

So as you can see there are many reasons why it is more beneficial for you to purchase used auto parts when repairing your car. Not only is it a great way to save money, which everybody loves, but it is an excellent way to help the environment as well.
