The Lamborghini Aventádor
Sports Cars June 9th, 2011The Aventador is the latest in a long line of Raging Bulls is the latest product from Italy’s second best known automobile manufacturer, and definitely, the maddest of them all. The name is derived from a very successful Spanish fighting bull. It is designed to be successor to the legendary Murcielago. Codenamed the LP700-4, it was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show at the beginning of 2011, to frenzied media speculation.
It’s designed to grab a child by his collar and shake him half to death, simply on account of its looks. It’s a mishmash of crazy angles, gaping vents and angry lines. It also features Lamborghini’s famed scissor doors, now ubiquitous with the flagship car of the company, for every generation. It was first featured on the Countach, and it immediately made its way into every teenage boy’s bedroom wall. As you swing open the doors and lower yourself into the snug cockpit, you’re greeted by an instrument console clearly inspired by fighter jets. The engine starter motor is activated by a button, hidden under a torpedo-style flip switch.
After the assault on the visuals is taken care of, the massive heart of the newest Lamborghini goes after the aural sense. It’s powered by a mammoth 6.5 liter V12 engine, which puts out a scarcely believable 690 bhp. That makes it the most powerful road going car the company has ever produced. All that power is sent to the massive wheels through a seven speed single-clutch transmission, specially produced by Graziano Transmissioni, and a Haldex all-wheel drive system, which generally sends more than 80% of the engine power to the rear wheels alone. Disappointingly, there is no manual transmission option available. The figures that result are off the scale. This flagship model can accelerate from a standstill to 62 mph in under 3 seconds, and can go on to a top whack of over 220 mph.
The Aventador features technology derived from racing cars and the company says that it is at least two generations ahead of any of its competition. It’s easy to see what the company officials are talking about. The occupant cell is made from specially reinforced carbon fiber, and the car features fully independent adjustable suspension. These technologies are currently used in Formula One. It increases occupant safety, and the independent suspension allows more of the car’s wheels to be in contact with the tarmac for more time, thus allowing more grip, for more time.
It is the new benchmark in hyper sports cars, featuring technology like push rod suspension derived from the most serious of all racing cars- Formula One. The body is designed entirely out of carbon fiber, which makes it very light and very strong. The problem with carbon fiber is that it’s very expensive, but when you’re paying almost half a million dollars for a car, chances are you wouldn’t really care for money.
Automobile Lamborghini officials say that the car will have a production run of 4000 units, and deliveries won’t be starting before June 2011. The lucky owners are sure going to have a great time.
